When You’re Potty Training Puppies, Decide On The Best Method

Saturday, July 18th, 2009
There are two main methods for potty training puppies.  Both require patience, persistence and consistency.  Here are the details for you to decide which one would work for you and your new best friend.

Crate Training
This is popular, fast and very effective.  The puppy’s crate is his or her home and it will not do its business in its home.  When the puppy wakes in the morning, take it outside to a specific spot for it to do its business.  After each meal, take the puppy to its business spot.  Finally, at the end of the day, take your puppy out to the same spot for it to do its business and then back into its crate for the night.  Consistent repetition of these sequences will lock them into the puppy’s mind.

Paper Training
This method for potty training a puppy is a little more involved.  The bottom line is that you’re teaching your puppy to do its business on newspaper in a specific spot in your house.  The puppy is lead to the paper first thing upon waking and after meals and again at the end of its day.  Once the routine of going to the paper each time it feels the need to go is locked into the puppy’s mind, you start moving the paper closer and closer to the door and then outside to a specific spot.  Once this specific spot outside is set in the puppy’s mind, take away the paper.  Again, consistent repetition of these sequences is the key.

There you have it, two methods for potty training puppies outlined for you to decide which one will work for you.
